What is RuneQuest?
RuneQuest is a fantasy roleplaying game in which you play fantasy-world
adventurers, also called characters, helping them to live their lives.
A "character" is a roleplaying term for any imaginary person
created according to roleplaying game rules. In RuneQuest, the characters
which players guide are called adventurers. Characters which the gamemasters
operate are called "non-player characters." As a player you
wear the mask of your adventurer in the make-believe world which your
gamemaster creates. An adventurer is an extension of you, motivated
by your imagination and acting by your wishes in a place where your
expression can be free. Like you, your adventurers will have problems,
likes, and dislikes, and will change and grow through play.
RuneQuest Materials
RuneQuest has been around for years and has been enjoyed by many people.
We are now going to briefly cover the materials that you will be required
to have in order to play effectively. First of all, you will need the
basic RuneQuest game itself. If you would like to purchase your own
copy of RuneQuest, we would suggest using
eBay to find a copy.
When searching for a copy of RuneQuest, we would recommend that you
get the deluxe edition. This edition of RuneQuest includes a players
book, magic book, gamemaster book, creatures book, glorantha book, player
notes, game aids, and a full color map of fantasy Europe. We will describe
each below briefly.
Players Book: This book contains the core
of the RuneQuest rules and a blank character sheet. You can make copies
of the master character sheet for play. The chapters about creating
an adventurer and skills are the most important. The game system chapter
covers general procedures. The combat chapter covers specific combat
situations. The world chapter explains how to deal with natural forces
and events.
Magic Book: The beginning chapter covers
the basics of RuneQuest magic. You should familiarize yourself with
the three perspectives between spirit, divine, and sorcery magic. The
ritual magic section covers common magical practices.
Gamemaster Book: The first chapter covers
gamemaster duties, activities, and responsibilities. The other chapters
provide encounter tables, standards of living, price lists, ship and
sailing rules, and more. The final chapter includes a ready to play
scenario.
Creatures Book: The first chapter covers
ideas about limitations on creatures. It includes many varied creatures
with details about each creatures environment, abilities, and characteristics.
Glorantha Book: An original world created
to use with your RuneQuest adventures. It is an alternative to using
Fantasy Europe.
Player Notes: This guide gives you several
ideas about how to play the game along with various hints.
Game Aids: This other guide includes some
of the most useful tables.
RuneQuest also requires the use of several types of dice during play.
There are 30-sided dice, 20-sided dice, 10-sided dice, 8-sided dice,
6-sided dice, and 4-sided dice. Certain combinations of these dice will
create varied results. All dice have abbreviations. The letter "D"
represents the word "die" or "dice." For example,
a 6-sided die would be referred to as D6. Dice are also preceded by
the number of dice to be rolled. For example: 3D6, 5D6, or 10D6. Sometimes,
additions to these rolls can be made such as: 3D6+2 or 4D6-1. Finally,
dice designations may be combined such as: 1D6 + 4D8.
Well, now you have a good foundation about what you need to play RuneQuest.
